90 Minutes to Close the Loop, Episode 9

In Episode 9 of our 90 Minutes to Close the Loop web series we discussed the specific challenges for the HORECA sector when disposing of their glass packaging and talked about actions that should be put in place to support the HORECA sector in reaching higher targets for collection. We also shared key insights from a new study on glass packaging in the HORECA channel and practical case studies from across Europe.

Products packed in glass are mostly consumed either at home, or in hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars (HORECA). In this episode, we explored how the glass collection & recycling value chain is interacting with the HORECA sector:

? What is the situation across Europe and how does it differ from country to country?

? What are the specific challenges for the HORECA sector when disposing of their glass packaging?

? What actions have been put in place to support the HORECA sector in reaching higher targets for collection?

? Why a roadmap, and what should be its key principles?

Vanessa Chesnot, Head of Public Affairs & Product Policy, FEVE (European Container Glass Federation) presented the key findings from a new study on glass packaging in the HORECA channel. For the first time, we have revealed new market data on HORECA establishments across Europe and estimated the share of products packed in glass that are consumed in the HORECA channel. This study is a critical part of our roadmap to increase the amount of glass that is collected and recycled in the HORECA sector.

José Manuel Nuñez-Lagos Bau, General Manager, Ecovidrio, Marisa Lima, Communications Coordinator, RESINORTE and Pieter Vierstraete, Material Recovery Manager, Vanheede Environment Group presented case studies from their respective countries (Spain, Portugal, Belgium) on glass collection in HORECA. Emilio Gallego Zuazo, Secretary-General, Spanish Hospitality Confederation joined them later in the panel debate named “What should be key principles for a roadmap on glass collection in HORECA?”
